Point11:Use of foods produced by recombinant DNA techniques are limited.

Use of GM foods is limited in Japan.The safety assessment of GM foods is mandatory under the Food Sanitation Law. The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare (MHLW) receives application, and the Food Safety Commission (FSC) evaluates the safety in terms of human health.Only products that have undergone safety assessment are permitted of use.

GM foods not undergone safety assessment in Japan cannot be imported to Japan. Especially, following lists need to be tested at every time import by instruction of quarantine

Papaya

PRSV(=Papaya ringspot virus) was serious problem at papaya farmers in Hawaii. Virus resistant 55-1 GM papaya has resolve the problem. It is undergone safety assessment in Japan at 1997. However YK,HN and SC are not undergone safety assessment and not banned in Japan.
